The CRS cafeteria was packed with CRS families enjoying ‘The Smurfs’ movie and popcorn. Thank you to Ron and Heather Hwalek for coordinating this fun-filled event.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 4TH: CRS SCHOOL FAIR from 10:00 – 2:00 (snow date – Saturday, February 11th) The CRS School Fair is a fun filled day with raffles, games, prizes, a bake sale, moonbounces, and food. Allan’s Angels Therapy Dogs from Bolton Veterinary Hospital will be on-site and our mascot Speedy will be making an appearance.
In addition to the classroom raffle baskets, this year we have the following items to raffle off thanks to the hard work of Diane Behrmann: · A Keurig Coffee Machine · Tickets to the Lutz Children’s Museum · Tickets for four to the New Britain RockCats · Gift certificates to Stop & Shop, The Bright Spot, Riens Deli, Restaurant.com, and many, many more. If anyone has any items they would like to donate for the school fair raffles, please contact Diane at madydichris@aol.com.
The School Fair cannot be a success without donations and volunteers. Please send in your classroom basket items and snack-size food or drink items for the Loop the Can game (a collection box has been set up in the front foyer of the school). If you are able to volunteer time to work at the fair or have any questions or donations, please email Karen Aafedt at aafedt@sbcglobal.net. Also, baked goods are needed for the bake sale and cake walk. Please bring your baked good in either Friday, February 3rd after school or after 8:30 a.m. on the day of the fair.
VALENTINE’S DAY MESSAGES This year you can send your child a special Valentine’s Day message on February 14th. A form with details will be coming home soon. All parents need to do is send in $1.00 along with their message and the PTO will write the message on a heart and deliver it to your child’s classroom on Valentine’s Day. SPRING FUNDRAISERS Mixed Bag Design: Fundraiser is back by popular demand. Catalogs will be going home in late January and orders for these ‘green’ and useful bags are due by Friday, February 24th. Checks should be made out CRS PTO and questions should be directed to Kelley Mathes at KelleyMathes5@gmail.com.
Yankee Candle: This fundraiser was a huge success last year so we will once again be selling Yankee Candles. The fundraiser will run from March 5th until March 16th. The PTO will earn 40% of all sales and Yankee Candles make a wonderful Mother’s Day gift. Detailed information about this fundraiser will be sent home in early March. Hope to see you at the School Fair on February 4th and at the next PTO meeting on February 9th at 6:30 p.m. JANUARY, 2012 RECENT PTO ACTIVITY Items purchased through the Gift & Wrap fundraiser were distributed to families during conferences in December. The fundraiser netted a profit of $6,811. The top two sellers for the school and winners of the $50 Visa gift cards were announced. At the January PTO meeting, four seller names will be randomly selected to win $25 Visa gift cards. Thank you to all who participated and a huge thank you to Lori Barfield and Kelley Mathes for organizing the fundraiser.
The December Scholastic Book Fair sales were $7,665.06 with the PTO earning a cash profit of $1,916.27. In addition, the PTO purchased $373.14 in items via Scholastic Dollars; including, books for the Library, $5.00 credits for school staff, and books for the Summer Reading program. Thank you to Laurie Bajorek and Rosie Wemmell for organizing the fair and making it a success.
Prior to the December PTO meeting, a cookie swap was held and cookie platters were prepared for CRS staff. Platters were prepared for the teachers lounge, office, cafeteria and custodial staff. Thank you to Kelley Mathes for organizing this event.
Our school mascot, Speedy, posed for pictures with students who suggested the name Speedy in the original naming contest. All of the pictures will be on display at CRS soon. The below picture has been submitted to the Journal Inquirer and Rockville Reminder so be on the lookout! HELP WANTED CRS music teacher, Mrs. Rubenstein, is still looking for a volunteer to play the piano at school concerts. Also, CRS art teacher, Mrs. Gag, is looking for volunteers to help hang artwork in our school hallways. Please contact either teacher if you are interested in helping.

DECEMBER, 2011 DID YOU KNOW? That the PTO earns approximately $2,000 each year from the collection of Box Tops from the Box Tops for Education program. In December, the PTO expects to receive a check for $565. This year we have a goal of raising $2,685.00 for our school. We will be working as a team to reach our goal. If we reach our goal, the whole school will receive a special surprise at the end of the year. Please continue to cut out and send in Box Tops! |
RECENT PTO ACTIVITY CRS students have voted and the name for our new Roadrunner Mascot is Speedy! Students who suggested the name Speedy in the original contest will be photographed with the mascot in December.
A fundraiser at Anthony’s Restaurant was held in October. The PTO earned a profit of $150 from this fundraiser. Thank you to all the staff and CRS families who participated.
The Gift & Wrap fundraiser has ended. We are thrilled to announce that sales for this fundraiser were over $13,000. Profit will be determined in December. Please note that all orders will be available for pick-up at conferences in December.
American Education Week was celebrated November 13th – 19th. The PTO Appreciation committee treated CRS staff to a buffet of breakfast snacks to thank them for their continued commitment to our school and students.
The Campbell’s Labels for Education program is ongoing. Please continue to cut out and send in labels. Please logon to the Campbell’s Labels for Education website in December – there are a number of ways to earn additional points for CRS.

Two GL Script Gift Card orders will be placed in December. Please remember that gift cards for holiday gifts can be purchased through this program. The first order is due on Tuesday, December 6th with a delivery date of December 13th. The second order is due on December 13th with a delivery date of the 20th. RECENT PTO ACTIVITY Entertainment Book Fundraiser: The Entertainment Book fundraiser has ended. If you have not yet either returned the book sent home with your child or turned in your orders, please do so as soon as possible. Thank you to Elissa Blanchard for coordinating this fundraiser.
Thanks to Sue Bassick for organizing another wonderful Ice Cream Social. The evening was a huge success with many CRS families enjoying delicious Shady Glen ice cream, spending time with friends, and meeting the new CRS Roadrunner mascot! A total of 388 sundaes were served and the PTO would like to send out a big thank you to all the parents and staff who volunteered that night.
As many families saw at the Ice Cream Social, Center Road School now has a mascot, the CRS Roadrunner which was purchased by the PTO School Spirit Committee. A contest will be held among CRS students to name the new mascot so please send in your ideas.
The Appreciation Committee organized breakfast items for the CRS staff for the first day of school. A huge thank you to Kelley Mathes for organizing this event.

Family Reading Night is the kickoff of the CRS Reading Program. Bring a blanket and pillow and enjoy family reading time on the gym floor followed by storyteller Les Julian. Additional information about this fun family night will be sent home soon.
One of the PTO’s biggest fundraisers of the year, Gift & Wrap, will kickoff on Tuesday, October 4th. The Jeanine Fall Catalog offers a wide range of gift, entertaining, kitchen and paper items. Additionally, students have the opportunity to earn various prizes based on the number of items sold. Last year the PTO netted a profit of $6,200 from this fundraiser.
To encourage school unity and spirit, we will have one School Spirit Day each month. Following is a list of the Spirits Days for the school year:

For the 2011-2012 school year, the PTO has allocated $8,000 in funds for cultural arts programs and assemblies. For the month of October, the PTO will organize and fund the following programs:

Welcome to the CRS PTO! All parents and teachers are automatically members of the PTO. Everyone is encouraged to attend meetings and to become involved in the various programs and activities sponsored by the organization. A general definition of a parent volunteer is a person who is willing to share time, talent or an extra pair of hands to help in the educational development of our children.
Monies raised from PTO activities are used for educational and social purposes within the community. The PTO raises money through fundraisers (entertainment books, gift & wrap, gift cards, Yankee Candle), school events (book fairs, school fair), and various other sources (box tops, grocery store programs, local business fundraisers). The proceeds (approx. $25,000 per year) are used to fund a number of CRS activities and events, including cultural arts programs and assemblies (full school and grade level), one family night per month, the monthly reading program (prizes) and CRS folders for all students, and agendas (calendars) for 3rd-5th graders. We also provide teacher fund allocations and recognize the staff throughout the year. Scholarships are also awarded to deserving high school seniors – plus so much more! RECENT PTO ACTIVITY In June, the PTO awarded $750 scholarships to three graduating Rockville High School students who attended CRS. Alicia Annelli won the Bresciano scholarship, Lyndsey McCurry was awarded the Engelson scholarship, and Lauren Kidd was awarded the Novak scholarship.

RECENT PTO ACTIVITY The Spring Book Fair was a huge success. Sales totaled $6,547.78 and the PTO funded over $2,400 in books for the Monthly Reading Program and Summer Reading Program. An additional $448 was spent on dictionaries for all 5th grade students. Thank you to all who volunteered their time to work the book fair. Also, thank you to Laurie Bajorek and Rosie Wemmell for organizing the fair.
Family Movie Night was held on Friday, May 20th. The movie ‘Despicable Me’, popcorn and water was enjoyed by all in attendance. Thank you to Heather Hwalek for organizing this fun evening.
Kelley Mathes of the PTO Appreciation Committee prepared an amazing breakfast for all CRS staff on Wednesday, May 4th. The PTO also recognized Administrative Professionals Day and Nurses Day by thanking our wonderful staff with gifts. Finally, Karen Aafedt provided beautiful flower corsages to the band and chorus teachers and the accompanists for Fine Arts Night.
The PTO received a check in the amount of $734 in April for the collection and submission of Box Tops. In total for the school year, the PTO received over $2,000 from the submission of Box Tops – that equates to over 20,000 Box Tops. Thank you to all who participated and to the committee chair, Stella Jonas.
UPCOMING EVENTS/IMPORTANT DATES Wednesday, June 1st: School Spirit – Pajama Day Thursday, June 9th: PTO Meeting – Please plan to arrive at 6:00 p.m. for the meet and greet with our CRS PTO Scholarship recipients. The PTO meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday, June 10th: Rock Cats Game (including fireworks) Tuesday, June 14th: School Spirit (grades PK – 4) – In honor of Flag Day and in support of our troops wear red, white and blue or camouflage. The 5th grade trip to Boston is scheduled for June 14th and those students are asked to wear their CRS Class of 2011 t-shirts.
CRS Yearbooks are available for sale. The yearbook costs $20.00 and will be distributed in June. All 5th grade students receive a free yearbook from the PTO. To order a yearbook, please send a check (payable to CRS PTO) or cash to the attention of Yearbook/Amy Shane. RECENT PTO ACTIVITY Both the Mixed Bag and Yankee Candle fundraisers were extremely successful. While final figures are not yet in, it looks like the PTO raised over $11,600 from these spring fundraisers. Items are expected to be delivered before Mother’s Day. Thank you to Kelley Mathes and Monica Bardon for coordinating these successful fundraisers.
The CRS Parent Resource Center is available in the school library and consists of hundreds of books and resources. The subjects range from discipline, to meditation, ADD, step families, adoption, death, afraid of the dark, working parents, and many, many more. To sign out a book, simply leave your name, book title, contact information, and the date you borrowed the book in the spiral notebook on the shelf. Through points from the Campbell’s Labels for Education Program, the PTO was able to purchase gym/recess equipment including; a ball carrier/basket, foam balls, and jump ropes. Thanks to Amy Shane for coordinating this program. The PTO will be looking to fill a number of Board and Committee positions for the 2011-2012 school year. Open Board positions are Co-President and Secretary. MARCH, 2011 PTO FUN FACT Did you know that the PTO subsidizes one field trip each year for grades PK - 4 at CRS? Annually, the PTO allocates $1,500 in funds to these field trips. Additionally, the PTO fully funds the 5th grade trip to Boston in June. |
GOOD NEWS FROM THE BOARD OF EDUCATION At its February 14th meeting, the BOE approved funding to purchase three interactive whiteboards (SmartBoards) before the end of this school year for CRS. |
RECENT PTO ACTIVITY Family Game Night was held on January 28th and the Family Dance was held on February 11th. A great time was had by all who attended. Pictures will be included it the CRS yearbook. Thank you to Colleen Bogli, Vikki Nagalis, Heather Schauster and Heather Hwalek for organizing these events. Congratulations to Mrs. Schrager’s 3rd grade class who was the overall top seller from the fall Gift & Wrap fundraiser. Mrs. Schrager and 10 students had a blast grabbing dollar bills in the money booth! A poster board of pictures will be on display at CRS soon. Thank you to everyone who sent in Box Tops in the first half of the year. Top collectors for their grades won $10 Toys R Us gift cards. Please continue to send in Box Tops as the contest for the 2nd half of the school year has begun. NEWS FROM THE PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT: The Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser was held on Wednesday, February 9, 2011 for students in kindergarten through grade 5 all day I the gymnasium. The students and staff raised a total of $4,136.00 for the American Heart Association! Thank you to the PTO for providing healthy snacks (oranges and graham crackers) for the 500 participates! A special thank you to Mrs. Moss for all her help. INTRAMURALS: Mr. Gardiner is the Intramural Advisor! The first intramural (afterschool sport/activity) will be Gymnastics beginning the week of March 21 to the week of April 11. Intramurals is open to fourth and fifth grade students twice a week from approximately 2:45 – 3:45 p.m. and parents need to provide transportation. Permission forms will be distributed to interested students. |
UPCOMING EVENTS/IMPORTANT DATES · Tuesday, March 1st: School Spirit – Tie Dye Day (Due to the confusion from the snow days and so that all who are interested can participate, we are ‘re-doing’ Tie Dye Day in March). Please show your school spirit and be on the lookout for photographers! · Thursday, March 10th: PTO Meeting – 6:30 p.m. in the Library. · At the February PTO meeting, it was decided that the 2011 spring fundraisers would be Yankee Candles and Recycle Bags. SATURDAY, MARCH 12TH: CRS SCHOOL FAIR from 10:00 – 2:00 The CRS School Fair is a fun filled day with raffles, games, prizes, a bake sale, moonbounces, and food. The Vernon Fire Department and Vernon Canine Unit will be on-site with their fire trucks, ambulances and dogs. In addition to the classroom raffle baskets and the local store/restaurant raffle items, this year we have the following amazing items to raffle off thanks to the hard work of Angela Vernola and Karen Aafedt: · 4 – 1 day Disney Parks Hopper Passes · A Keurig Coffee Machine · 2 premier passes to the CT Science Center · Admission passes to many CT museums; including, the Wadsworth Atheneum, Lutz Children’s Museum, NE Air Museum, Children’s Museum of Southeastern CT, Imagine Nation, Children’s Museum of West Hartford, and the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History. Prizes earned from the collection of game ‘star tickets’ are an exciting part of the fair for all the kids. In addition to the typical toy prizes, this year a limited number of iPod shuffles will be available for redemption. The School Fair cannot be a success without donations and volunteers. Please send in your classroom basket items and snack-size food or drink items for the Loop the Can game (a box is set up in the foyer of the school). If you are able to volunteer time to work at the fair or have any questions or donations, please email Monica Bardon or Robin/Ron Apinis at CRSSchoolfair@snet.net. The committee will continue to send home flyers with School Fair information over the next few weeks. RECENT PTO ACTIVITY The Gift & Wrap fundraiser netted a profit of $6,000 for the PTO. Mrs. Schrager’s class was the top selling class and all students who participated in the fundraiser, as well as Mrs. Schrager, will have the chance to enter the Money Booth. Congratulations to all the following top sellers per grade (each winner received a $25 Target Gift Card) and to the students selected to receive a $25 Target Gift Card (from all students who sold 10 or more items). The Fall, 2010 Scholastic Book Fair was a huge success. Total sales of $7,555 were 18% higher than the 2009 Book Fair. The PTO received a cash profit of $1,121 plus $1,500 in Scholastic Dollars. Thank you to Laurie Bajorek and Rosie Wemmell for organizing this event. Thank you to everyone who has sent in Box Tops. The PTO will be receiving a check for approximately $1,500 in early January. This equates to 15,000 box tops submitted. Please continue to send in Box Tops to your child’s teacher. A huge thank you to Stella Jonas for coordinating this program. In December, the Appreciation Committee prepared cookie platters for all CRS staff. Thank you to all the parents and teachers who brought in cookies for the platters. On December 16th, the 2nd grade was treated to an assembly on plants and soil nourishment by High Tough/High Tech. Remember to clip Labels for Education from participating products and send them into school. The labels can be placed in the collection box outside of the CRS office. RECENT PTO ACTIVITY The Center Road School sign in front of the school has been refurbished. A huge thank you to Vernon resident John Kopec, Duncan and Fox Custom Cabinetry and Furniture, for donating his time and service, and to CRS parent Jeff Schambach, Sun Fire Graphics LLC, for donating time and material. Thanks to Sue Bassick for organizing another wonderful Ice Cream Social. The evening was a huge success with many CRS families enjoying delicious Shady Glen ice cream and friends. The kickoff of the CRS Reading Program, Family Reading Night, was held on October 15th. A large number of books were raffled off and the children enjoyed a program featuring live animals and artifacts. Thanks to Sue Bassick and Vicki Nagelis for organizing this event. The Entertainment Book fundraiser has ended. Thanks to Elissa Blanchard for organizing this fundraiser. The PTO is looking for someone to shadow Elissa and help run this fundraiser next year, please contact a Board member if you are interested. Profit for the entertainment book fundraiser will be reported next month. The Gift & Wrap fundraiser is coming to a close. Please send in your orders if you have not done so already. A huge thank you to Lori Barfield and Kelley Mathes for coordinating our largest fundraiser of the year. Suzanne Appleton and Sarah Harrigan of the Grants Committee have applied for a $3,900 grant through the Lowe’s Toolbox for Education program. The grant would provide funds to be used for landscaping improvements to the front and side area of the school. Keep your fingers crossed that CRS is awarded the grant. During the week of October 4th, CRS 5th graders were treated to a four day Shoebox Camera Workshop with Thomas Mezzanotte. They learned about the history of photography and made, used and developed their own pin hole camera. Thanks to the Assemblies Committee for scheduling this amazing workshop. The School Spirit committee has been busy with the following activities: · Welcome gifts were distributed to all CRS kindergarteners. · CRS cups were purchased and are in process of being distributed to all students. · CRS pennants were purchased and will be raffled off during lunch waves. · Embroidered CRS clothing orders were due on October 25th. Items will be distributed before Thanksgiving. · Students can show their CRS spirit by participating in monthly Spirit Days: Monday, November 1st: Inside Out Day Wednesday, December 1st: Wacky Wednesday (mismatch, crazy hair, funky socks, plaids and stripes) Monday, January 3rd: CRS school colors (wear green and white or clothing with our logo) Tuesday, February 1st: Tie Dye Day Tuesday, March 1st: Read Across America Day (Cat in the Hat Clothing – black and white) Friday, April 1st: Twin or Multiples Day (friends can dress alike) Monday, May 2nd: Scout Day/Sport Team (boy and girl scouts can wear their uniform or wear your favorite sport team shirt) Wednesday, June 1st: Pajama Day Spirit Day reminders will be sent out monthly. Spirit Day participants should be on the lookout for photographers – pictures will be taken for the yearbook and to post throughout the school. Links to register are available at www.crspto.org. OCTOBER, 2010 September was a busy month for the students, teachers, and parents at CRS. The PTO has been busy organizing fundraisers and functions to help make this a great school year. If you are looking for a way to become more involved in your child’s education, consider the PTO. We are a group of parents and teachers that meet once a month to host various events throughout the year, support teachers’ needs in the classroom and organize fundraisers. We have found that our PTO email list has been a successful way to communicate with parents. If you would like to join the PTO email list, please send an email to PTO Secretary Kelley Mathes at kcmathes@travelers.com. School and PTO information is also available on the PTO website at www.crspto.org. The PTO is also working to create a Student/Family Directory. RECENT ACTIVITY The Appreciation Committee organized breakfast items for the CRS staff for the first day of school. A huge thank you to Karen Aafedt and Kelley Mathes for organizing this event. Thank you to Elissa Blanchard for coordinating this fundraiser. Sue Bassick organized CRS parents to ride the kindergarten buses for the first 4 days of school. Thanks to bus riders Wendy Bannon, Elissa Blanchard, Laurie Bajorek, Heidi Opdenbrouw, Maureen Kermode, Lynn Moss and Amy Shane. The PTO provided four boxes of school supply items to the teaching staff at CRS to help supplement supplies provided by families.
Did you notice the new landscaping around the CRS sign in the front of the school? This beautiful improvement to our school grounds was funded by the PTO and installed at a discounted rate by Garden Barn Nursery. Your pictures can be included in the CRS yearbook. Simply upload your photos to the Lifetouch website, as follows: Logon to http://onlineyearbooks.lifetouch.com and enter the following information: Job #: 1367011 Username: 91zyx45 Password: 67bru53 A system check screen will come up the first time you use the site. Click next at the bottom of those screens to continue. This will take you to the WebEase home page. On the right hand side of your screen, go to "Image Library" under the shortcuts. This is where you will create folders to hold all of your pictures. Click "create folder" and follow the prompts. Your folders will show as a list on the left while in the Image Library screen. To upload, click "Image Upload". An upload window will pop up. Where it says "Upload into:", use the drop down menu to choose the image folder in which you would like your photos to be stored. Once you have chosen a folder, click the "Browse" button to browse your computer for the photos you will be uploading. (You may have them in "My Pictures", on a memory stick, or coming right from your camera, for example.) Double click on a photo to put it into the upload queue. You will see them appear on the chart as you choose them. Once you have listed all the photos for upload (up to 50 at a time), click the "Upload Images" button at the bottom. You will see the photos uploading as percentages. Once they reach 100%, they are in the folder |
Just a reminder that the PTO is a non-profit organization. We fundraise annually so that we can continue the tradition of providing quality family and academic programs that support the Center Road School community.
